Arthur E. Rommel 91 of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Monday, January 8, 2007, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant. Rev. Dr. Jerry Kelly and Elder Leroy Johnson will officiate the service. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. Friends may call after 3:00 p.m. on Friday at the Beatty-Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant where the family will be present from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Rotary International in his memory.
Arthur was born on January 23, 1915, in Oskaloosa, Iowa the son of Arthur Evan & Stella Mae Budde Rommel. He graduated from the Mt. Pleasant High School and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He was united in marriage to Helena Turlejowna on March 12, 1938, in Evanston, Illinois. They made there home in Mt. Pleasant. He was a tax accountant by profession, and served in the United States Navy, stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, during the American occupation of Japan in 1945. He and his wife were active in community activities, and enjoyed traveling extensively during their retirement. He was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Pleasant, Rotary, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Sigma Tau Delta, the Iowa Corrections Association and the Iowa and National Accountants Associations. His favorite pastime was reading. During the 1958-59 school year Arthur and Helena welcomed into their home Agnita Rowaan, now Mrs. Ben Van der Weerden, as an AFS Exchange Student from the Netherlands while she attended Mt. Pleasant High School.
He is survived by his two sons: Evan of Oviedo, Florida and Joseph of Mesa, Arizona; three daughters: Arlene Pickett and her husband Dwight of Lakewood, Colorado; Rebecca Cram and her husband Carroll of Walker, Iowa; and Ruth Garrett of Granville, Ohio; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He will also be remembered by his devoted assistants Gerald William Sickels and Dorothy Garmoe, both of Mt. Pleasant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters and one infant great grandson.
