Carroll Shelman Crane, 98 of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Park Place Long Term Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Timothy Graham and Pastor Mike Hess officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7th at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant. Burial will be in the Lambirth Cemetery southeast of Lockridge. Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Baptist Church in his memory.
Carroll Shelman Crane was born on December 22, 1911, the only child of Walter & Elsie Shelman Crane. He was united marriage to Lola Gladyce Williams in October of 1934; she preceded him in death on November 7, 1957. On October 15, 1962 he was united in marriage to Marie Swan Sloan. He farmed southwest of Mt. Pleasant in the Round Prairie area and raised Angus cattle; he also worked for the Iowa ordinance Plant in Middletown for 20 years. He was on the Henry County Development Board and a County Supervisor for 4 years. He belonged to the Goal Line Club, Coin Club and was an active member of the Republican party and was a volunteer at Midwest Old Threshers for many years.
After retiring, he and Marie moved to Port Charlotte, FL in 1977, living there for 24 years. While there he spent his time gardening, golfing and volunteering for the Senior Cultural Center. He maintained and grew over 100 rose plants for the center. He raised experimental roses for Jackson & Perkins. He also was a tour guide for many trips with the Cultural Center for 15 yrs. They moved back to Mt. Pleasant in 2001, Marie died on June 29, 2002.
He accepted Christ as his Savior at 12 years old while attending Round Prairie Baptist Church. He was a member of Tri City Baptist Church in Port Charlotte, FL. And attended Calvary Baptist Church, in Mt. Pleasant.
Carroll is survived by 2 sons: Doyle Crane (Rose) of Carol Stream, IL, Wray Sloan (Yvonne), of Mt. Pleasant, 3 daughters, Lonna Phelps (Dave) Salem, Judith Sloan Cline, of Mississippi, Joyce Sloan Smith (Bob), Clarence, Iowa, daughter-in-law Linda Sloan, Mt. Pleasant. 24 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 6 great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, 3 sons: Lauren, Frank and John Sloan, one granddaughter, Rhea Crane Hohimer and 1 great grandson.
