Clara Swailes Obituary

Clara M. Swailes 91, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Monday, January 23, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center Hospice in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Burial will follow in the Spencer Cemetery rural Stockport. Friends may call from 1 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 9 a.m. until service time at Murphy Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Stockport Library or to Mercy Medical Center Intensive Care Unit and Hospice.

Clara MayBell Swailes was born on April 2, 1920, in Hamlock City, Michigan, the daughter of Cora Heare. She resided in Midland, Michigan, until moving to Stockport in 1929. She was united in marriage to Wilson Woodrow Swailes on December 4, 1939, in Kahoka, Missouri. She was a longtime resident and business women of Stockport and later moved to Mt. Pleasant where she resided for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Rebekah Assembly of I.O.O.F.

She is survived by two daughters: Sandra (Garry) Philips of Stockport and Linda (Steven) Cochran, of Fort Wright, Kentucky; three granddaughters: Laura (Bob) Sampson of Drakesville, Lisa (Rick) Plowman of Douds, Leslie (Mark) Heckenberg of Stockport; eight great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; a sister: Mabel Webb of Burlington, and a brother: George (Carol) VanStienberg of Lampasas, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents: Cora & Verne VanStienberg: husband: Wilson Swailes and one sister: Bettye Hill.
