Darrell Kinney Obituary

Darrell E. Kinney 93, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2010
at Park Place in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Herb Shafer officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant with full military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, and to the VFW Post 2561 Building Fund in his memory.

Darrell was born on October 31, 1916, in rural Henry County the son of Alvin O. & Myrtle Young Kinney. He was united in marriage to Florence Burky in Wakefield, Rhode Island. He was a T/Sgt in the 15th Army Air Force during WWII and had been stationed in Wakefield. He flew 50 missions over Europe and received three Bronze Stars, Purple Heart and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. After his discharge from the service in September of 1945, he returned to Mt. Pleasant and started a business with his brother Alvin. Later he started Darrell Kinney Excavating and Grading and as his sons grew, they became part of the business which subsequently became known as Kinney and Sons Excavating and Grading. Darrell was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant and also served on the early Industrial Board of Mt. Pleasant supporting community growth and was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Darrell is survived by his wife Florence of Mt. Pleasant, three sons: James (Judy), Donald (Linda), and Richard (Sally) all of Mt. Pleasant., two daughters: Barbara (Curtiss) Crane of Mt. Pleasant and Margaret (John) Biggs of Des. Moines. 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Three brothers: Wayne (Judy) of Cedar Rapids, Larry (Karen) of Minn. MN and Wendell (Roberta) of Mt. Pleasant, and one sister: Lois Six of Carlisle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister: Erma Mabeus and one brother: Alvin O. Kinney, Jr.
