Eugene L. Welcher, 83, of Gladstone, Illinois and formerly of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Mike Johnson officiating. According to his wishes cremation will be accorded following the service. Military Honors will be conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. A memorial has been established in his memory.
Eugene was born on April 23, 1928, in Mt. Pleasant the son of Frank & Mary Viola Holland Welcher. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946. He was united in marriage to Elva L. Jones on April 9, 1946, at the Great Lakes Navy Base in Chicago. He worked for the Stith and Devinger Amusements for 13 years and then the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Burlington for 35 years. He was a life member of the V.F.W. and Fraternal Order of the Eagles; he enjoyed bowling and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife Elva, and his sons: Terry (Herman) Welcher of Lowell, Danny (Boone) Welcher of Mt. Pleasant, Tommy (Doc) Welcher of Rome and David Welcher of Gladstone. 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. One brother Bill (Donna Jean) Welcher of Manchester and one sister: Genevieve Brown of New London.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 5 sisters.
