Georgia L (Calhoun) Sammons

Georgia L. Sammons, 78, longtime resident of Rome passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Georgia was born on September 14, 1947, in Rome, the daughter of Ernest “Red” and Nevah (Septer) Calhoun.  She was united in marriage to Dennis E. Sammons on June 4, 1966, at Kahoka, Missouri.  He preceded her in death on January 3, 2016.

Georgia was very active in her community. She worked at the Rome Post Office, for the city of Rome and was a faithful member of the Rome Baptist Church.  She was known for her excellent baking skills and loved to share with others. Georgia had a love of children. Throughout the years she babysitting for many families.  She enjoyed square dancing.  Holidays were very special for her, especially Christmas.  She would have her home all decorated with lights and was instrumental in getting Santa Claus to come to town for the kids.   Georgia worked at Vega of Mount Pleasant and later for Mount Pleasant Schools as a cook.  For 23 years she and Dennis, along with their son Dean, operated Deano’s Restaurant.   Her love for her family was most important; her grandchildren and great grandchildren gave her so much joy.

Those thankful for sharing in her life include her children, Edward (Brenda) Sammons of Rome, Dean (Susan) Sammons of Rome and Annette (Carey) Hawk, of Trenton, her ten grandchildren, Brock (Courtney) Adrian, Tyler (Samantha) Westercamp, Cameron Sammons, Clayton Sammons, Grace Dieu, Chelsea (Jonathan) Kramer, Jessica (Shawn) Landess, Jamie (Richie) Pardall, Jacquelyn (Tyler) Lally, and Jalyn Gerleman, along with her 18 great grandchildren, her sister, Edna (Raymond) Stott, of Burlington, her sisters-in-law, Retha Sammons  and  Rosie Wiggins and her brother-in-law, Guy (Diane) Sammons.

Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, PareSetta Sammons, two sisters, Eloise Van Zile, Nancy E. Calhoun and her two brothers, Darrell Calhoun and Francis (Pee Wee) Calhoun.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the Rome Baptist Church with Pastor Guy Sammons officiating.  Burial will follow in the Grant Cemetery.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, where the family will be present from 4 to 7 p.m. that evening.  Memorials may be directed to the Rome Baptist Church or to the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in her memory.
