John H. Upton 76 of Phoenix AZ and a former resident of Mt. Pleasant died on Saturday, October 14, 2006 at the Phoenix Baptist Hospital in Phoenix.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 20, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from the Beatty-Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant. Rev. Jeff Crawford will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until service time on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Richwood Cemetery rural Mt. Pleasant. Military honors will be conducted. A memorial has been established to the Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix AZ.
John was born on July, 26, 1930, in Mt. Pleasant the son of Donald C. & June Hayward Upton. He was united in marriage to Dorothy J. Butcher on April 15, 1956 at Newton, Iowa. John served his country from 1951 to 1953 in the Marines. He was in Japan and participated in action against enemy forces in Korea. He worked for Honeywell in Phoenix as a software engineer until his retirement in 1987. He also served on the police reserves for 10 years in Phoenix, and as a private investigator for 10 years. After his retirement he rode in Ragbrai for 5 years. He was an avid Cardinal fan.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Phoenix, his daughter Pamela Schwarz and her husband Andy of Silver City New Mexico and his son Scott Upton and his wife Lois of Kaneohe, Hawaii. Three grandchildren. Three sisters: Sara Weschler, Anna Turner and Linda Stith and her husband Terry all of Mt. Pleasant. Three brothers: Jim Upton and his wife Donna and Glenn Upton all of Mt. Pleasant. Harold Upton and his wife Carolyn of Mountain Grove Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Elizabeth Ann in infancy.
