Mary Craig Obituary

Mary Irene Craig, 101, of Salem, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the home of her great-nephew and his wife, Gary & Kelly Septer, where she had made her home for the past couple of years.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 24th at 6:30 p.m. at the Salem East Cemetery with Rev. Tom Palmer officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Memorials may be directed to the Crew Public Library and or to the Lewelling Museum both of Salem.

Irene was born on December 26, 1909, in Henry County, the daughter of Harry & Ruby Percival Craig. She lived in Jefferson County a few years when she was young but spent most of her life in Henry County. She was a schoolteacher by profession, receiving her Master of Arts Degree from Iowa Wesleyan College. She taught in one-room country schools, moving on to Demark Public Schools. She taught most of her years in the Salem High School, teaching English, Typing and Home Economics. She was also sponsor for the school paper and yearbook, girl's basketball coach, senior class sponsor, and director for all the high school plays. After the Salem High School closed, she taught English at Mt. Pleasant Junior High School. Irene enjoyed sports especially the Iowa Hawkeye's, crossword puzzles, travel, and her family. At the age of 98, she traveled to Italy with other family members to visit her great-niece and family.

Irene is survived by her sister-in-law: Elsie Craig of Salem, three nieces: Norene Septer and her husband Marvin of Fairfield, Diana Craig of Salem and Pamela Oltman and her husband Wayne of Anamosa, as well as her great-niece Erika Conrad and her husband Rickey of Solon, and her great-nephews: Gary Septer and his wife Kelly of Fairfield, Mike Septer and his wife Michelle of Lenexa, Kansas, Steve Septer of Dubuque, Frederick Meyers and his wife Erica of Iowa City, and Stan Perdios of Ames and three great-great nieces and two great-great nephews. She will be especially missed by Sady.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: Leo and Russell.
