Paul F. Sommerfeld, 93, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Friday, March 6, 2015, at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015, at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Jeffrey McPheron officiating. Burial will be in the Richwood Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. A memorial has been established to the Richwood Cemetery in his memory.
Paul was born on March 21, 1921, in Burlington the son of Frank & Hazel Johnson Sommerfeld. Paul attended Burlington High School before joining the United States Army in 1942, serving in New Guinea and during the Philippine Liberation during W.W. II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He was united in marriage to Virginia Lane on August 7, 1942, in Hannibal, Missouri. He was a longtime farmer and was a member of the Finley United Methodist Church.
Paul is survived by his wife Virginia of Mt. Pleasant, and his children; Richard (Lynne) Sommerfeld of Texas, Charlotte (Steve) Zihlman of Mt. Pleasant and Sheryl (John) Carhoff of Cedar Rapids, and 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Sharon Kay Hazen, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
