Raymond L. Griest 87, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 25, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home with Pastor Guy Sammons officiating. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Murphy Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant with full military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Raymond was born on August 12, 1925, in Mt. Pleasant the son of Ernest & Mamie Piper Griest. After his schooling he enlisted in the Army serving during WWII. He was united in marriage to Dorothy A. Lyons on January 28, 1946, in Mt. Pleasant. Raymond retired from the Mt. Pleasant Post Office after 33 yrs. of service. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Masonic Lodge #8, American Legion of Mt.Pleasant, N.A.R.F.E., and was a past president of Mt. Pleasant Little League Association.
Raymond enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, reading western books, crossword puzzles, fishing and sitting in his swing in the front yard.
He is survived by his children: Radenna J. Heinz of Burlington, Diane Sammons and her husband Guy of Mt. Pleasant, Susan Griest and Jerry Lamb of New London, Raymond "Bill" Griest and his wife Juanita of Mt. Pleasant, Larry Griest of Burlington and Tim Griest of Mt. Pleasant. 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter Tammy and a great granddaughter: Jessica Lynn Sammons; two brothers and four sisters.
