Walter W. Detrick 84, of rural New London Passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the Salem Congregational Church with Rev. Aaron Helterbran officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Full Military Honors conducted by the West Point Honor Guard. Friends may call after noon on Saturday, June 21, at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant where the family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Salem Congregational Church and to the Great River Hospice in his memory.
Walter was born on August 21, 1929, in rural Henry County the son of Warren Edward & Donnie Mae Krekel Detrick. He joined the Army in 1949; serving in the 101st Airborne Division. While in the service he married Mary M. Roberts on May 5, 1951, at Ft. Campbell. They lived in Henderson, KY, then moved to Lowell, Iowa and later bought a farm. He worked at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown until 1973, and then took over the family business of Detrick Well and Pump retiring in August of 1994. He was a member of the Salem Congregational Church and the West Point American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Mary and his children: Tom (Marcia) Detrick of Wales, WI, Randy (Tammy) Detrick of Mt. Pleasant, Steve (Nancy) Detrick of Davenport, Jacque (Rodney) Doan of Lees Summit, MO, Ed (Susan) Detrick of Orlando, FL. 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; two sisters: Francis Anthony of Davenport and Leah Rhum of Mt. Pleasant.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Rex and five sisters: Nellie, Mayme, Mary, Wilma and Fern.
